Biography of Lothar de Maizière
Lothar de Maizière is a German politician and a Christian Democrat who was active during the time of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He comes from a French Huguenot family that immigrated to Germany. His uncle, Ulrich de Maizière, was a prominent German military officer, and his cousin, Thomas de Maizière, is a current politician in the CDU party and a former Federal Minister in Angela Merkel's government. Thomas also served as the head of the Chancellor's Office in Germany and is expected to become the Minister of Interior in the future coalition government.
Political Career
Lothar de Maizière's political career was relatively short. After completing his education at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, where he studied viola, he played in a symphony orchestra for ten years. Due to medical reasons, he decided to change career paths and pursued a law degree at the Humboldt University in Berlin. He worked as a lawyer before being elected to the People's Chamber of the GDR in 1990. He made history by becoming the last Prime Minister of the GDR.
After the reunification of Germany, Lothar de Maizière served as the Deputy Chairman of the CDU party. On October 3, 1990, he was appointed as the Federal Minister for Special Assignments. However, his political career took a turn when the popular magazine "Der Spiegel" published its own investigation, claiming that de Maizière was an unofficial collaborator (agent) of the GDR's Ministry of State Security (Stasi) under the code name "Czerni." De Maizière denied these allegations, but as a result, he resigned from his position on December 17, 1990.
