António Costa: Portugal's Premier

António Costa is a Portuguese politician who has served as Prime Minister of Portugal since 2015.

Early Life and Education

Costa was born in Lisbon, Portugal, to writer Orlando da Costa. He studied law at the University of Lisbon and became involved in the Socialist Party at a young age.

Political Career

After working as a legal advisor to Jorge Sampaio, Costa became involved in student politics and headed the student organization and its newspaper. He later served in the Lisbon City Council and became a member of the Assembly of the Republic in 1991.

Parliamentary and Ministerial Roles

Costa held various parliamentary positions, including Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs (1995-1997) and Minister of Justice (1999-2002). He also led the Socialist Party's parliamentary group.

European Parliament Member

In 2004, Costa became a Member of the European Parliament for the Socialist Group. He served as Vice-President of the Parliament.

Minister of Internal Affairs

Costa returned to the Portuguese government in 2005 as Minister of Internal Affairs under José Sócrates. He resigned in 2007 to run for Mayor of Lisbon, which he won and held until 2015.

Leader of the Socialist Party

In 2014, Costa became leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party. Under his leadership, the party established an agreement with the Communist Party of Portugal, the Green Party, and the Left Bloc.

Prime Minister

As a result of the agreement, the parliament supported a Socialist government led by Costa. He was appointed Prime Minister by President Cavaco Silva on November 24, 2015, and took office on November 26.
