Biography of Lou Adler
Early Life and CareerLou Adler is an American manager, director, and record producer. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in East Los Angeles. In 1964, Adler co-founded Dunhill Records and served as the leading producer and director of the label until 1967.
Founding Ode Records and Monterey International Pop Festival
In 1967, Adler sold Dunhill Records to ABC Records for $3 million and founded a new company called Ode Records. The same year, he played a major role in organizing the Monterey International Pop Festival and filming the documentary "Monterey Pop".
Notable Productions
Adler worked with various artists in his career, including Jan & Dean, Sam Cooke, The Mamas & the Papas, Johnny Rivers, Barry McGuire, Scott McKenzie, The Grass Roots, Spirit, Carole King, The Weaver Temptations, and Cheech and Chong. In 1972, he won two Grammy Awards for "It's Too Late" by Carole King, which was named "Record of the Year", and her album "Tapestry", which was named "Album of the Year".
Film Career
Adler ventured into the film industry in 1978 when he directed the movie "Up In Smoke" starring Richard 'Cheech' Marin and Tommy Chong. The film became a classic and Adler even recorded a commentary track for it in 2000. In 1981, he released another project called "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains", which performed poorly at the box office but gained popularity on cable television. He also directed the cult films "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in 1975 and its sequel "Shock Treatment" six years later.
Personal Life
Lou Adler married actress and singer Shelley Fabares in 1964. However, their marriage ended after two years and they officially divorced in 1980. Adler later married Page Hannah, the younger sister of actress Daryl Hannah, and they have been together since.
