The Personal Valet of Napoleon
Louis Constant Wairy was born on December 2, 1778, in Perwez, a Belgian village that became part of France after the annexation of Belgium during the French Revolution. He spent a significant portion of his life devoted to the service of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Constant Companion to the Emperor
Wairy was an unwavering companion to Napoleon, accompanying him on numerous campaigns, including the Battle of Marengo. "From the day the First Consul left for the battlefield of Marengo, which I joined him for, until the Emperor left Fontainebleau, when I was forced to part with him, I was only separated from the Emperor twice, once for three days and once for seven or eight days," Wairy wrote. With the exception of these brief absences, he remained by Napoleon's side throughout his reign.
Chronicler of Napoleon's Life
Wairy's intimate knowledge of Napoleon's life and court inspired him to write a book of memoirs. He diligently researched various accounts written about Napoleon, his family, and his entourage, eager to correct any inaccuracies or misrepresentations. "When, in these books, many of which, to tell the truth, are but a pitiful collection of thick volumes, I found assertions that are distorted, mistaken, or slanderous, I took pleasure in restoring the truth," he remarked.
