Early Life and Education
Dorus studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he graduated in 1828. His sister, Julie Dorus-Gras, was a celebrated opera singer, while his grandson, Henri Rabaud, became a renowned composer.
Embracing the Boehm Flute
In the 1830s, Dorus became a pioneer in the adoption of the Boehm flute, an improved instrument invented by Theobald Boehm. He was among the first French flutists to embrace this revolutionary design and advocate for its widespread use in France.
Technical Innovation
In 1838, Dorus made a significant contribution to the Boehm flute by proposing the addition of a closed G-sharp key. This innovation, widely employed by flute makers for over two decades, facilitated the transition to the new instrument for flutists accustomed to earlier models.
Pedagogical Contributions
