Louis III, Prince of Condé

Early Life and Military Career

Louis III de Bourbon was born into a royal family on 10 November 1668. He was the son of Henri III de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, and Anne Henriette of Palatinate-Simmern. In 1685, he was honored with the Knighthood of the Order of the Holy Spirit.

He distinguished himself in military campaigns, participating in the Siege of Philippsburg (1688), the Siege of Mons (1691), and the Siege of Namur (1692).

Inheritance

In 1709, upon his father's death, Louis III inherited his titles, positions, and estates. However, unlike his father, who was known as "Monsieur le Prince," he was referred to as "Monsieur le Duc," as the title of First Prince of the Blood had passed to the Duke of Orléans. He preferred the title Duke of Bourbon to that of Prince of Condé.

Marriage and Family

In 1685, Louis III married Louise Françoise de Nantes (1673-1743), an illegitimate daughter of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. Together, they had eight children:

- Marie Anne (1690-1760), Abbess of Maubuisson

- Louis IV Henri (1692-1740), Prince of Condé

- Louise Élisabeth (1693-1775), married Louis Armand II de Bourbon-Conti

- Louise Anne (1695-1758), Mademoiselle de Charolais

- Marie Anne (1697-1741), Mademoiselle de Clermont, married Louis de Melun (d. 1724), Duke of Joyeuse

- Charles (1700-1760), Count of Charolais

- Henriette Louise (1703-1772), Abbess
- Élisabeth Alexandrine (1705-1765), Mademoiselle de Gex
He also had an illegitimate daughter with Mademoiselle de Blanchfort:

- Louise Charlotte de Bourbon (1700-1754), Mademoiselle de Dampierre, legitimated in 1726, married Nicolas de Changy, Count of Roussillon

Death

Louis III died suddenly on 4 March 1710, at the age of 41. His death is believed to have been caused by an apoplectic stroke. He was predeceased by his father but outlived his mother.
