Born in La Bassée in 1761 to a woodcarver, Louis-Léopold Boilly was a self-taught artist who began painting at the tender age of 12.

Early Life and Training

Boilly's exceptional portraiture skills earned him acclaim. He studied the trompe l'oeil technique under Dominique Doncre before relocating to Paris around 1787.

Genre Paintings

Boilly's distinctive genre paintings captured the everyday lives of the French middle class during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These intimate scenes depicted a variety of subjects, from family gatherings to market scenes.

Recognition and Honors

Boilly's talent was recognized with the award of a medal from the Paris Salon in 1804. In 1833, he was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. His work continued to be highly valued by art connoisseurs, as noted in the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary at the turn of the 20th century.

Family Legacy

Boilly's artistic legacy extended to his sons. His son Julien Léopold (1796-1874) became a painter, while Alphonse (1801-1867) specialized in printmaking.
