Biography of Verroust
Early Life and EducationAlphonse Verroust was born in Azbrook, France, where a street is named after him. He studied at the Paris Conservatory under Gustave Vogt, and after Vogt's retirement, became the head of the oboe class from 1853 to 1860.
Musical Career
Prior to his appointment at the Conservatory, Verroust worked primarily in his native northern France. In 1843, he directed the municipal music school in Steenvoorde.
Compositions
Verroust's most notable compositions are his 12 "Concert Solos," which were performed in annual student competitions at the Conservatory and possibly at the Military Music School where he also taught. These solos were designed to be accompanied by piano or strings.
Other notable works by Verroust include his "24 Melodic Etudes," "Souvenir of Old Quebec," and a Fantasy on themes from Donizetti's opera "Don Pasquale."
Legacy
Verroust's compositions continue to be performed by contemporary oboists, particularly his "Concert Solos." He is remembered as a skilled oboist, composer, and teacher who made significant contributions to the development of oboe technique and repertoire.
