Biography of Louise Fletcher
Louise Fletcher is an American actress and recipient of the Academy Award and Golden Globe. She was born on July 22, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. She was the second of six children in the family of Estelle Caldwell and Reverend Robert Capers Fletcher, who was an Episcopal priest from Arab, Alabama. Both of her parents were deaf and worked with hearing-impaired and hard-of-hearing individuals. Fletcher, along with her siblings Roberta, John, and Georgianna, was born without any hearing impairments. She was taught to speak by her aunt, who also influenced Fletcher's decision to become an actress.
Early Career
While attending the University of North Carolina, Fletcher moved to Los Angeles, California, where she found work as a secretary and took evening acting classes. She initially appeared in several television series, including a critically acclaimed episode of "Maverick" in which she played the role of Katie Bent. She then married Jerry Bick and took a career hiatus to properly raise their two children.
Rise to Fame
In 1974, Fletcher returned to film with a role in the crime drama "Thieves Like Us." The film was produced by her husband and Robert Altman, who was also the director. When Altman and Bick had a falling out while working on the next film, "Nashville" (1975), Altman decided to cast Fletcher in the role of Linnea Reese, which was originally intended for her. However, Fletcher didn't dwell on this and instead caught the attention of director Milos Forman for her outstanding performance in "Thieves Like Us." Forman cast her as Nurse Ratched in the award-winning drama "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), which earned Fletcher the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Later Career
Following her Oscar win, Fletcher appeared in numerous films, including "Exorcist II: The Heretic" (1977), "The Cheap Detective" (1978), "The Lady in Red" (1979), "Brainstorm" (1983), "Firestarter" (1984), "Invaders from Mars" (1986), "Flowers in the Attic" (1987), "A Dangerous Woman" (1995), "Best of the Best" (1989), "Steel Magnolias" (1990), "Virtuosity" (1995), "The Paperboy" (1996), and made a cameo appearance as Aunt Sebastian in the cult film "Cruel Intentions" (1999). She also became a television star, appearing in TV movies such as "The Karen Carpenter Story" (1989), "Nightmare on the 13th Floor" (1990), "Fatal Exposure" (1994), and "The Stepford Husbands" (1996). Fletcher had a recurring role as Kai Winn Adami, a ruthless religious leader of the planet Bajor, in the legendary series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993-1999). She was nominated for an Emmy Award for her guest appearances in the TV series "Voyagers!" (1996) and "Joan of Arcadia" (2004).
Personal Life
Fletcher was married to literary agent and producer Jerry Bick from 1960 until their divorce in 1977. They have two sons, John Dashiell Bick and Andrew Wilson Bick. Fletcher temporarily stepped away from her acting career for 11 years to focus on raising her children.
