Career

At the age of 16, Longley joined the Australian junior national team, and a year later he joined the Perth Wildcats. However, his stay with the Wildcats was short-lived as he was recruited by the University of New Mexico's basketball team. In 1991, Longley was selected in the NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, he struggled to demonstrate exceptional skills in the following two seasons, partly due to internal problems within the team. Eventually, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls before the end of the 1993-1994 season.

With the Bulls, Longley found success playing alongside legendary players like Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen, and Toni Kukoč. Together, they won three consecutive championships. After the 1998 championship, Longley was traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he struggled for two seasons.

Retirement and Legacy

Longley's basketball career came to an end due to health issues with his left ankle. By the time he retired, he had averaged 7.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, setting an absolute record for an Australian player. In 2001, Longley was included in the Australian Institute of Sport's "Best of the Best" ranking and in 2006, he was inducted into the Basketball Australia's Hall of Fame in Melbourne.

On October 8, 2009, Longley was also included in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He was married multiple times, with his first marriage bringing him two children. In 2008, he married musician and television presenter Anna Gare.
