Biography of Lucas Barrios

Lucas Ramon Barrios, a Paraguayan footballer of Argentine origin, is a forward for the Brazilian club "Palmeiras" and the Paraguayan national team. He participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Barrios rose to fame as a promising player from Cobresal, where he scored many goals. Prior to joining Cobresal, Barrios spent most of his professional career in the second division of Chile or Argentina. However, after joining Cobresal, he demonstrated his innate striker abilities by scoring 14 goals in the Apertura 2007 season.

Move to Colo-Colo and Atlas

In early 2008, the club "Colo-Colo" loaned Barrios for 6 months to strengthen their squad in the Copa Libertadores 2008. Due to the loan agreement, the contract expired in June 2008. Colo-Colo offered $1.5 million for Barrios, but "Atlas" rejected the offer as it did not meet their valuation of $2 million. Eventually, Colo-Colo offered $2 million, however, the club only acquired eighty percent of the player, with Barrios retaining the remaining twenty percent of his ownership rights. Barrios' salary at "Atlas" was nearly $400,000 per year, but before the transfer to Colo-Colo, he had to accept only forty percent of his salary.

Opportunities with Nancy and Borussia Dortmund

Lucas Barrios was on the verge of signing a four-year contract with the French club "Nancy", but on January 12, 2009, Gabriel Ruiz-Tagle, the president of Colo-Colo, rejected Nancy's offer, stating that further offers were expected. In July 2009, Barrios moved to Borussia Dortmund. The transfer fee amounted to 4.2 million euros. In his first season, he became the team's top scorer, scoring 23 goals in all competitions.
