Mattia Nastasic: A Serbian Defensive Colossus

Early Career and Move to Fiorentina

Mattia Nastasic, born in Niš, Serbia, is a stalwart defender currently playing for German club Schalke 04. His footballing journey began as a youth product of Partizan Belgrade. After a loan stint at Teleoptik in 2010/11, Nastasic agreed to join Fiorentina at the end of the season. He officially signed with the Italian club alongside Brazilian Romulo in 2011 for a transfer fee of 2.5 million euros.

Establishing Himself at Manchester City

Nastasic made his Serie A debut in 2011 and quickly made a name for himself. In 2012, he embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Manchester City. As part of the deal, Montenegrin defender Stefan Savic moved to Fiorentina. Nastasic slotted seamlessly into City's defense, alongside captain Vincent Kompany, and became a key figure in their title-winning 2013/14 season.

Loan to Schalke and Bundesliga Move

Nastasic's time at City was hampered by injuries, limiting his appearances in 2013/14. In January 2015, he was sent on loan to Schalke 04, who later exercised their right to purchase him from Manchester City for 9.5 million euros. Nastasic signed a contract with the German club until 2019.

International Career

Nastasic has represented Serbia at various youth levels before making his senior debut in 2012. He has since become an integral part of the national team, making significant contributions in international competitions.

Honors

During his time at Manchester City, Nastasic achieved the following accolades:

Premier League champion: 2013/14

League Cup winner: 2014
