Education
Lucia Azzolina was born in 1982 and graduated from Leonardo da Vinci High School in Floridia. She pursued a degree in Philosophy at the University of Catania, graduating in 2004. Subsequently, she earned a teaching qualification from the School of Specialization in Secondary Teaching and became a certified history and philosophy teacher in 2008.
Teaching Career
Azzolina taught history and philosophy at high schools in La Spezia, Sarzana, and Pisa. In 2013, she obtained a law degree from the University of Pavia while continuing her secondary school teaching career. In 2014, she taught at the Quintino Sella Institute in Biella before focusing on educational law and becoming involved in a school workers' union. She resumed teaching at the Quintino Sella Institute in 2017 and became a senior teacher in 2019.
Political Career
In 2018, Azzolina was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as a member of the Five Star Movement. In 2019, she became the Undersecretary of State for Education, Universities, and Research in the second Conte government. During her time as Undersecretary, she proposed a bill to reduce class sizes and supported the government's plan to reform the school system.
Minister of Education
In December 2019, Prime Minister Conte announced the division of the Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research, appointing Azzolina as Minister of School Education. She was officially sworn in in January 2020.
COVID-19 Response
In March 2020, Azzolina announced the government's decision to close schools and universities across Italy to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In June 2020, she oversaw the implementation of special regulations for high school graduation exams and student enrollment to address the challenges posed by the pandemic.
