Luciana Aymar was born on August 10, 1977, in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. She began playing hockey at the age of seven at the "Club Atlético Fisherton" in her hometown. After six years, she joined the "Jockey Club de Rosario." Eventually, the talented young girl started training with the junior national team, which required her to frequently travel to Buenos Aires.

In 1997, Aymar became a part of the national women's field hockey team and participated in the Pan American Games Junior Championship. The following year, at the age of sixteen, she made her debut in the senior national team, which finished fourth in the World Cup. Aymar became the youngest ever hockey player in the history of the Argentine team.

Aymar became a key figure in the remarkable generation of Argentine hockey players who achieved tremendous success in international tournaments. She won the FIH Player of the Year Award, presented by the International Hockey Federation, a record-breaking seven times.
