Early Life and Education
Born in France, Georges Barrère began his musical education at the Dijon Conservatory. He honed his skills as a clarinetist and conductor, leading military bands in France.
Immigration to the United States
In 1918, Barrère immigrated to the United States for new opportunities. He became an American citizen in 1923.
Musical Career in the United States
Barrère's musical career in the United States flourished. He joined the Philadelphia Orchestra as a clarinetist and arranger, while also directing various wind ensembles. In 1937, he began teaching at the University of Southern California, where he remained until 1944.
Hollywood Film Scores
After leaving academia, Barrère focused primarily on creating arrangements for numerous Hollywood films. Among his most famous works was the iconic soundtrack for Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments."
