Biography of Lucimara da Silva

Lucimara da Silva is a Brazilian athlete who competes in heptathlon. She represented her country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and participated in the World Championships in Athletics in 2007.

Early Life and Career

Lucimara was born on July 10, 1985, in São Paulo, Brazil. She began her athletic career specializing in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. In 2002, she became the champion in the hurdles and finished second in the long jump at the South American Youth Championships in Athletics. In 2003, she won the hurdles event at the South American Junior Championships in Athletics and finished fifth in the triple jump.

Transition to Heptathlon

Lucimara switched to heptathlon in 2004 and quickly rose to the national level. In 2005, she finished fourth overall at the South American Championships in Athletics, her first international competition in the event. The following year, she made her debut in Europe, scoring 4,584 points at the Multistars tournament in Desenzano del Garda, Italy. Back in her hometown of São Paulo, Lucimara improved her performance to 5,611 points and displayed her versatility at the 2006 Lusophony Games, winning the 100-meter hurdles and helping the Brazilian women's relay team take gold in the 100 and 400 meters.

Championship Success

In 2007, Lucimara set a personal record of 5,897 points at the Multistars tournament and won her first continental title in São Paulo. She also took bronze in the hurdles event. At the Pan American Games, she scored 5,800 points and added another bronze to her collection. As the only representative from her continent in the women's heptathlon at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, she finished 31st.

Olympic Journey and Disqualification

In April 2008, Lucimara qualified for the Olympic Games by scoring 5,906 points in Rio de Janeiro. She also won the gold medal in heptathlon at the 2008 Ibero-American Championships. However, she placed fourth at the national championships later that month. Representing Brazil at the Beijing Olympics, she finished 17th in the heptathlon but broke a South American record that had stood for 25 years, scoring a total of 6,076 points.

In 2009, Lucimara won the Brazilian Championships with a score of 5,884 points and successfully defended her title at the South American Championships in Athletics. However, her victory was short-lived as she failed a doping test conducted a few days before the competition. The test revealed the presence of erythropoietin, a banned substance. Her coach, Jayme Netto, admitted to administering the substance to some of his athletes. Lucimara was subsequently banned from competition for two years as a result of her coach's misconduct.
