Early Life and CareerHeinrich Popow was born in Kazakhstan but relocated to Germany with his family at the age of seven. At the age of nine, he underwent an above-knee amputation due to Ewing sarcoma in his calf muscle. Despite the challenges, Popow remained resilient and pursued his passion for sports.
Sporting Success
Popow's athletic career began in 2001 at the Bayer 04 Leverkusen club. Under the guidance of Karl-Heinz Düe, he made his breakthrough at the 2002 World Championships in Lille, winning a bronze medal in long jump. In the following years, he continued to excel, earning bronze medals in the 100m and 200m races, as well as long jump, at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. At the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, he improved his time in the 100m to 12.98 seconds and was awarded silver. His greatest triumph came at the 2012 London Paralympics, where he claimed gold in the 100m, fulfilling a goal he had set for himself before the Games.
