Lucy's Story: A Silent Killer Strikes

Lucy was a young British woman who was preparing for her wedding but her life was cut short by a deadly and often undiagnosed disease - bile duct cancer. Her symptoms began with an unexplained and unrelenting itch, leading to a tragic misdiagnosis.

Diagnosing the Mysterious Itch

When the severe itching started in July 2013, Lucy initially suspected scabies. However, topical treatments provided no relief. As the symptoms persisted and worsened, her doctor prescribed antihistamines, believing it to be an allergic reaction.

A Shocking Diagnosis

Months of misdiagnosis and countless doctor visits later, Lucy finally received the devastating news in October 2013: she had bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma). The tumor was in an advanced stage and inoperable.

The Rise of Bile Duct Cancer

Bile duct cancer is a rapidly increasing disease with a grim prognosis. In the United Kingdom, the number of cases has skyrocketed from under 40 in 1968 to over 2,000 in 2013. The reasons for this rise remain a mystery.

The Silent Killer

The bile ducts are responsible for carrying waste products from the liver to the intestines. Tumors can grow in the ducts, causing bile salts to build up in the body and deposit under the skin, resulting in intense itching. However, the disease often progresses silently until jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and tissues, sets in. By that time, it is usually too late for surgery.

Lucy's Final Days

Despite her diagnosis, Lucy remained positive and underwent chemotherapy. She married Liam in October 2014. In December 2014, she collapsed due to internal bleeding and passed away in February 2015 at the age of 29.

Liam's Heartbreak and Advocacy

Liam is determined to raise awareness about the silent killer that took his wife. He hopes to prevent others from experiencing the same heartbreak and suffering that he and Lucy endured. He urges for increased research and education about bile duct cancer.
