Biography of Lucy Liu
Lucy Liu (full name Lucy Alexis Liu) is a Hollywood actress, model, artist, and producer. She is known for her stunning and aristocratic appearance, completely devoid of Asian stereotypes. Liu works tirelessly, often putting in 14-hour days.
Early Life and Education
Lucy Liu was born on December 2, 1968, in New York City to a modest Chinese immigrant family. Her mother, Cecilia Liu, was a biochemist from Beijing, and her father, Tom Liu, was a construction worker from Shanghai with a university education. Liu is the youngest of three children, with an older brother named John Liu and a sister named Jenny Liu.
In an effort to provide their daughter with a good foundation for life in America, Liu's parents enrolled her in the prestigious specialized school, Stuyvesant High School, in New York City when she was just 5 years old. In 1986, she successfully graduated from the school, participated in a cultural exchange program in Singapore, and enrolled in a private university in New York. However, she soon transferred to the University of Michigan, where she completed her bachelor's degree in Chinese language and culture. During her time at the university, Liu also received training in dance, stage speech, visual arts, and acting. It was during her final years of study that she began to explore her interest in filmmaking and landed a role in the adventure film "Alice in Wonderland," where she played the blue-eyed blonde character Alice, despite being an Asian-American student.
Career Beginnings
In the fall of 1990, Liu informed her parents of her intention to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career as a professional actress. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, she started developing her acting career by working as a waitress and attending numerous casting auditions. However, her Asian ethnicity and appearance initially limited her opportunities, and she was often offered only minor roles and appearances in television shows.
In 1991, Liu had a small role in the popular teen drama series "Beverly Hills, 90210." After a series of minor roles in films and on television, she was offered the role of the villainous and ill-mannered Ling Woo in the comedy-drama series "Ally McBeal" in 1998. This role thrust Liu into the spotlight and earned her an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1999.
Breakthrough and Success
In 1999, Liu continued to appear in films, mostly in supporting roles. She portrayed a high-class BDSM prostitute involved with the Asian mafia in the thriller "Payback" and played a toy store clerk in the action film "True Crime." She also appeared in the comedies "Molly" and "Play It to the Bone" and participated in the saga "Charlie's Angels." In 2000, she played the kidnapped princess Pei Pei in the comedy film "Shanghai Noon" alongside Jackie Chan and starred as one of the "angels" in the action film "Charlie's Angels." The casting process for the role of Alex involved several well-known actresses, but Liu ultimately secured the role. During the filming of "Charlie's Angels," Liu had a heated disagreement with actor Bill Murray, resulting in production delays.
