Lucy Low: A Devastating Journey of Resilience and Frustration
Trapped in Hospital Due to Disability37-year-old British mother of four, Lucy Low, remains paralyzed after a botched surgery, leaving her bedridden for over a year. Despite being medically cleared for home, Lucy is unable to return to her family due to lack of wheelchair adaptations in her house.
Refused Disability Grant
Lucy's ordeal began with an accident at her wedding in August 2011. A fall resulted in damage to her coccyx, causing excruciating pain for almost two years. A surgical procedure to remove it rendered her paralyzed below the waist.
After multiple hospital transfers, Lucy was admitted to a facility in Devon. To return home, she requires a ground-floor shower, accessible bedroom, and a stairlift at an estimated cost of £30,000.
Despair and Loneliness
The refusal of a grant has left Lucy in despair. The family, who lives on one income, cannot afford the modifications. Lucy's husband, Adrian, expresses their shock at being denied assistance. The couple has six dependents, including four underage children.
Estranged from her family, Lucy says she "cries all the time." She misses her children, especially during milestones like exams. "Being away from them is horrendous," she says.
Lack of Options
The Low family's financial situation prevents them from pursuing other options, such as moving to a suitable property. Adrian's existing mortgage disqualifies them from obtaining a new one.
District Council Response
East Devon District Council acknowledges that no decision has been made on Lucy's case. They state that her eligibility for a grant is unlikely based on information provided so far. However, they await further assessment from her occupational therapist.
A Plea for Help
Lucy's story highlights the challenges faced by disabled individuals who are unable to access essential adaptations. Her family's plight serves as a reminder of the need for greater support and empathy towards those in similar situations.
