Life as a Former Soldier and Transgender Muslim
Early Life and Military ServiceLaurens Wallender was a former British soldier who identified as male at birth. Despite participating in typical male activities like drinking and socializing with fellow soldiers, Wallender struggled with intense gender dysphoria from a young age. Joining the Territorial Army in 2006 was a desperate attempt to conform to societal expectations of masculinity.
Transition and Identity Exploration
After a year of service, Wallender could no longer suppress their true self. They left the army and began exploring their gender identity. They experimented with feminine clothing, hormone therapy, and eventually underwent gender-affirming surgery to become Lucy Wallender. Lucy found employment in the familiar field of defense, but this time as a civilian kitchen staff member.
Conversion to Islam
In September 2021, Lucy made a significant decision to convert to Islam. Despite being aware that Islam is often perceived as conservative and disapproving of LGBTQ+ identities, Lucy was drawn to the faith.
Marriage and Faith
Lucy met a Muslim man named Murad online and became his second wife. While she did not initially disclose her transgender status, she believes Murad understood it. They have met twice since their marriage, engaging in sexual activity. However, adhering to the rules and rituals of Islam proved challenging.
Mosque Experience and Isolation
Lucy's visit to a local mosque was met with skepticism and interrogation. The mosque leadership ruled that she must pray with men, a decision that Lucy found unacceptable. Feeling humiliated, she opted to pray at home. The mosque stated that anyone following Islamic principles was welcome, but commented on Lucy's unique status as a transgender Muslim.
Pioneering a New Identity
Lucy believes that other transgender individuals within the Muslim community are hesitant to come forward due to fear. She draws on her own past experiences of self-denial to empathize with their struggles. By sharing her story, Lucy aims to create a more inclusive and accepting environment for transgender Muslims.
