The French Buccaneer: Le Picard

Early Years and Raids

Le Picard emerged as a French pirate in the late 1660s. He participated in L'Olonne's raid on Maracaibo and Gibraltar, contributing his brigantine and forty crewmen. Subsequent raids targeted Puerto de Caballos and San Pedro.

Alliance with Morgan

In 1669, Le Picard joined forces with Henry Morgan's expedition against Panama. He commanded the 10-gun ship Saint-Pierre.

Costa Rica and Hispania

After Morgan's expedition, Le Picard sailed to Costa Rica, where he sacked the town of Veragua. He planned to attack Nata in Panama but abandoned the idea due to the heavy Spanish presence.

Corsair Flotillas

False reports of Le Picard's death surfaced in 1679, but he reappeared in 1685 as part of an Anglo-French corsair fleet led by François Grognier and Captain Townley.

Panamanian Adventures

Le Picard led a detachment of 253 buccaneers across the Isthmus of Panama to raid undefended Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast. After Townley's death, Le Picard became captain.

Joining the Corsair Brotherhood

Edward Davis, Charles Swan, and Peter Harris joined Le Picard's squadron at various points. After attacking Guayaquil, Le Picard returned to the Caribbean, raiding Segovia and venturing north towards Canada.

War against England

During King William's War, Le Picard commanded a squadron that attacked the English colony in Rhode Island in 1690. However, he was forced to retreat with heavy losses.

Later Years

No further accounts of Le Picard's activities exist after the Rhode Island raid. His ultimate fate remains unknown.
