Biography of Lyudmila Narusova

Lyudmila Borisovna Narusova is a Russian politician who is known for being the wife of Anatoly Sobchak and a member of the Federation Council from the Republic of Tuva. She is also a member of the Presidium of the Central Council of the "A Just Russia" party. Narusova was born in 1951 in Bryansk, Russia. She graduated from Leningrad State University in 1974 and later completed her postgraduate studies at the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where she defended her dissertation and became a candidate of historical sciences.

In 1973, Narusova met Anatoly Sobchak, a lawyer who would later become the mayor of St. Petersburg. They got married and soon after, Narusova started working at the Leningrad Institute of Culture named after Krupskaya. Prior to marrying Sobchak, Narusova described herself as being "completely apolitical." However, in the early 1990s, she actively supported her husband in his political career, first during the elections for the Leningrad City Council, and later during his mayoral campaigns. As the mayor's wife, Narusova was involved in the establishment of hospices for terminally ill cancer patients in St. Petersburg. She also co-founded the Mariinsky Foundation, which prepared for the reburial of the remains of Emperor Nicholas II, in collaboration with the Patriarch of All Russia, Alexy II.

Narusova entered politics herself and successfully ran as a candidate from the "Our Home - Russia" bloc in the parliamentary elections in December 1995. She served as the chair of the commission responsible for compensating victims of fascist concentration camps in the State Duma. However, in 1996, Sobchak lost the mayoral elections to his deputy, Vladimir Yakovlev, and faced persecution from the authorities. He was forced to flee to France and only returned to Russia in 1999 when his former subordinate, Vladimir Putin, became the acting president of Russia. Sobchak passed away in early 2000.

After her husband's death, Narusova continued her political career. She became the president of the Anatoly Sobchak Foundation and served as an advisor to Alexander Voloshin, the head of the Russian presidential administration. She also became the chair of the supervisory board of the Foundation for Mutual Understanding and Reconciliation and a representative of the Russian government in the board of trustees of the German foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility, and Future."

In 2002, Narusova was relieved of her position as the chair of the supervisory board due to her active role in exposing the financial activities of the Foundation for Mutual Understanding and Reconciliation. She then became a television host, hosting talk shows such as "The Price of Success" on the channel "Russia."

In 2002, she was appointed as a member of the Federation Council from the Republic of Tuva. Despite criticism of her performance, she was reconfirmed in her position in 2007. Narusova is the mother of Ksenia Sobchak, a well-known television presenter and public figure in Russia.

Throughout her career, Narusova has been affiliated with different political parties, including the Russian Party of Life and the "A Just Russia: For Truth, Justice, and Growth" party. She has also been involved in various charitable and cultural activities.
