Luella Bates: The Trailblazing Woman Trucker

In a time when truck driving was considered a man's world, Luella Bates shattered barriers as the first woman to obtain a motor truck driver's license.

Early Life and Career

Luella Bates (née Born) was born on October 17, 1897. During World War I, she worked as a test driver for Four Wheel Drive (FWD) in Wisconsin, operating four-wheel drive trucks.

New York Breakthrough

After the war, Bates continued her work at FWD. In January 1920, she arrived in New York City for the National Automobile Show. There, she met Canadian-American politician Francis Hugo. Together, they made history when Bates became the first woman truck driver licensed in New York, over a century ago.

Nationwide Tour

Bates embarked on a nationwide tour as part of an FWD and Hugo's "Safety First" campaign. She drove through 25 cities, starting in Kansas City and ending in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Popular Science magazine hailed her as a "living proof of feminine efficiency" in May 1920.

Skilled Mechanic and Inspiration

Not only was Bates a skilled driver, but she was also a knowledgeable mechanic. Her example inspired countless women to break into male-dominated fields, including truck driving.
