Early Life and Career
Emanuele D'Azeglio was born into a noble family in Turin, Italy, in 1792. He studied law and became an assistant royal prosecutor in the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1834.
Constitutional Contributions
In the 1840s, D'Azeglio played a key role in drafting the Statute Albertino, the constitution of the Kingdom of Sardinia. He collaborated with Cesare Alfieri De Sostegno and Giacinto Borelli, and the statute was granted by King Charles Albert in 1848. It later became the foundation for the constitution of a unified Italy.
Military and Political Involvement
D'Azevlio fought in the First Italian War of Independence against Austria in 1848, including at the Battle of Custoza. After the Sardinian defeat, he briefly withdrew from public life. However, he became an advisor to King Victor Emmanuel II after Charles Albert abdicated in 1849.
Notable Achievements
Over the next 25 years, D'Azeglio held various prominent positions in the Italian government, including as a member of parliament and a minister. In 1859, he was appointed ambassador to France. One of his notable achievements during this period was his advocacy for the construction of the Mont Cenis Tunnel.
Presidency of the Italian Parliament
D'Azeglio's political career reached its peak in unified Italy. On November 15, 1874, he was elected President of the Italian Parliament. However, he died tragically less than a month later.
