Early Life and Education

Luigi Traglia was born on April 3, 1895, in Albano Laziale, Italy. He pursued his studies at the Pontifical Lateran University and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Ordination and Priestly Ministry

On August 10, 1917, Traglia was ordained a priest by Cardinal Basilio Pompili. He completed his studies in 1919 and served as a professor at the Pontifical Urbaniana University from 1919 to 1936.

Curia Positions

From 1927 to 1930, Traglia held various positions within the Roman Curia, including those at the Sacred Congregation of Seminaries and Universities and the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. On August 18, 1930, he was appointed expert and general deputy to the "Devil's Advocate" of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.

Archbishop of Caesarea in Palestine and Vicar of Rome

On December 21, 1936, Traglia was appointed Archbishop of Caesarea in Palestine and Vicar of Rome. He was ordained an archbishop on January 6, 1937, at the Lateran Basilica. He served as Vicar of Rome until March 28, 1960, overseeing the administration of the diocese on behalf of the Pope.

Cardinalate

On March 28, 1960, Traglia was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John XXIII, with the titular church of Sant'Andrea della Valle. Pope Paul VI later assigned him the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso on April 28, 1969. On March 15, 1972, he was promoted to Cardinal Bishop of Albano.

Vatican II and Papal Service

From 1962 to 1965, Traglia participated in the Second Vatican Council and served as a cardinal elector in the 1963 papal conclave that elected Paul VI. He was appointed General Vicar of Rome on March 30, 1965, a position he held until January 9, 1968.

Later Years and Legacy

Following his resignation as Cardinal Vicar, Traglia was appointed Apostolic Chancellor on January 13, 1968, a post he held until February 7, 1973. He became Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals on March 24, 1972, and was subsequently elected Dean on January 7, 1974, after the death of Cardinal Cicognani. As Dean, he also held the suburbicarian diocese of Ostia.

Cardinal Luigi Traglia passed away in Rome on November 22, 1977, leaving a legacy of service to the Church and the Roman Curia.
