Gilo of Paris: A Prominent French Cardinal and Poet

Early Life and Ecclesiastical Career

Gilo of Paris was born in the province of Toucy, France. He initially served as an archdeacon in Paris before joining the Abbey of Cluny in 1119. His ecclesiastical career took a significant turn when he received the patronage of Pope Callixtus II.

Cardinal and Papal Legate

In December 1122 or March 1123, Gilo was elevated to the rank of cardinal, becoming the Bishop of Frascati. He held this position until 1139. Gilo's diplomatic skills were recognized when he was appointed as the papal legate to Poland in the 1120s.

Mission to the Holy Land

In 1129-1130, Pope Honorius II dispatched Gilo to the Holy Land to resolve conflicts between the patriarchs of Tyre and Antioch.

Papal Schism and Return to Grace

During the papal schism of 1130, Gilo initially supported the antipope Anacletus II. However, upon his return from Syria, he reconciled with Pope Innocent II, who reinstated him as a cardinal on May 29, 1138.

Later Years and Death

Gilo's ecclesiastical career took a downturn during the Second Lateran Council in April 1139, when he was again deposed along with other former supporters of Anacletus II. Gilo of Paris passed away no later than the beginning of 1142.
