Early Life and Education

Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona, the current President of the Dominican Republic, was born on July 12, 1967, in Santo Domingo, the capital city. His mother, Isabel García de Abinader, is of Spanish-Canarian descent, while his father, José Rafael Abinader Wassaf, was a politician of Lebanese immigrant descent.

Abinader holds a degree in Economics from the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo. He also pursued postgraduate studies in project management at the Arthur D. Little Institute (now Hult International Business School) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, and studied corporate finance and financial engineering at Harvard University. Additionally, he earned an advanced management degree from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

Political Career

Vice Presidency and Presidential Contests

Abinader's political journey began in 2005 when he was elected Vice President of the center-left Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). In 2012, he ran as the vice presidential candidate for PRD in the presidential election.

After splitting from the PRD, he ran for president from the breakaway Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. His campaign in 2020 received consultation from former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Presidency (2020-Present)

Abinader was elected President of the Dominican Republic on August 16, 2020. Since taking office, he has focused on economic recovery and addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also implemented reforms aimed at improving transparency and combating corruption.
