Biography of Luis Carlos Sarmiento
Luis Carlos Sarmiento is a prominent Colombian businessman and the president and co-owner of the renowned bank Grupo Aval Acciones y Valores, SA. He is the only Colombian billionaire listed among the top 200 richest people in the world, ranking at 167 according to Forbes. His self-made fortune is currently estimated at $4.7 billion.
Early Career and Rise to Wealth
Despite starting his career as a simple administrator in a construction company, Sarmiento gradually established a reputation for being cautious and prudent. This allowed him to significantly increase his income, and he began acquiring companies one after another, mostly in the banking and financial sectors. As the number of companies became difficult to manage, he founded the holding company Grupo Aval, which consolidated all his interests in the banking, property, and telecommunications sectors.
Business Empire and Contributions
Sarmiento's corporation, Grupo Aval, offers a wide range of services, from loans and credits to insurance. Additionally, he owns approximately 22% of the country's banking assets. Known for his conservative management approach, Sarmiento's strategy has not only preserved his wealth and companies but also generated substantial profits, especially during the economic boom in Colombia in the mid-2000s. As a result, his company became the largest in Colombia and one of the largest in the Americas.
Family and Philanthropy
Currently, Grupo Aval is managed not only by Sarmiento but also by his son, Luis Carlos Sarmiento Jr., who is likely to inherit the right to oversee the empire after his father's passing. In addition to his work with the established company, Sarmiento is constantly on the lookout for new innovative projects. Currently, he is collaborating with a wealthy partner from Venezuela to explore the acquisition of a broadcasting license in Colombia.
Outside of his professional life, Sarmiento enjoys spending his free time with his wife and their five children, often traveling to their private island in the Bahamas. He is also known for his philanthropic efforts, contributing to various causes and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Colombians.
