Early Life and Education

Wilbur Ross Jr. was born in the United States in 1938. He pursued his education at Yale College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the humanities. During his time in college, he was involved in several extracurricular activities, including serving as the editor of the campus newspaper and working as a DJ on the college radio station. Initially, he did not envision himself pursuing a career in business.

Aspiring Writer to Businessman

Ross's initial ambition was to become a renowned writer. He dedicated himself to honing his writing skills by attending a fiction workshop, where he produced approximately 500 words per day. However, after several months, he realized that writing was not his true calling.

Start of a Successful Business Career

During his final year at Yale, Ross secured a summer internship at a Wall Street firm through a friend's connection. This experience marked the beginning of his highly successful career in business. He quickly established a reputation as a skilled bankruptcy expert, specializing in distressed asset situations. By 1997, he recognized the potential for expanding beyond his current endeavors.

Founding WL Ross & Co.

In 2000, Ross acquired the distressed assets of a private equity fund and established his own firm, WL Ross & Co., headquartered in New York City. He invested approximately $4,400 million into the company, attracting top-tier executives such as David Storper, David Wax, Steven Troy, and Pamela Wilson.

Expansion and Acquisitions

In 2004, Ross orchestrated the merger of Burlington Industries and Cone Mills, forming International Textile Group (ITG). ITG consisted of five subsidiaries, each operating under its own brand: Cone Denim, Burlington Apparel Fabrics, Home Furnishings, Carlisle Finishing, and Nano-Tex LLC. The company obtained a $150 million revolving credit facility from Bank of America. ITG's headquarters were located in the former Cone Mills building in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Other Ventures and Recognition

Beyond ITG, Ross has held leadership positions in International Auto Components Group, C&A, and Oxford Automotive. He is the founder of International Coal Group. Ross is also a member of Turnaround Management Association and an honorary member of the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Financial Success
