After graduating from Lee County High School, Bryan planned to move to Nashville, Tennessee, but had to postpone his departure due to the sudden death of his brother Chris. He later became a student at Georgia Southern University and eventually started working for his father, which again delayed his plans to move to Tennessee. He finally arrived in Nashville in 2001. Starting as a songwriter, Bryan gained popularity by writing songs for other artists. His song was featured on Travis Tritt's album "My Honky Tonk History" and he co-wrote Billy Currington's well-known single "Good Directions," which later entered the "Hot Country Songs" chart in 2007.
