Biography of Nancy Griffith
Nancy Griffith, an American country-folk singer and guitarist, was born on July 6, 1953, in Seguin, Texas. She is known for her diverse musical styles, with country, folk, and what she calls "folkabilly" being the predominant genres she explores.
Award-winning Album
In 1994, Griffith received a Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Folk Album" for her album "Other Voices, Other Rooms." The album features cover versions of songs that had a significant influence on her. One such song is "From a Distance" by Julie Gold, although Bette Midler's version achieved greater commercial success.
Success with Other Artists
Interestingly, other artists have achieved greater success with Griffith's songs than she has herself. For example, the composition "Love at the Five and Dime" performed by Kathy Mattea, and in Griffith's rendition, became a country music top-five hit. Similarly, the song "Outbound Plane," performed by Suzy Bogguss and reworked by Griffith and Tom Russell, also became a hit.
Personal Life
From 1976 to 1982, Nancy Griffith was married to singer-songwriter Eric Taylor. In the early '90s, she was romantically linked to Tom Kimmel, a singer-songwriter and poet. Although the couple had plans to marry, they never did.
Health Battles and Collaborations
After successfully battling breast cancer in 1996, Griffith was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1998. Despite her health challenges, she continued to tour and perform with musicians such as Buddy Holly's band, "The Crickets," John Prine, Iris DeMent, Suzy Bogguss, and Judy Collins.
Griffith has also collaborated with various artists, including Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, John Prine, Don McLean, Jimmy Buffett, Dolores Keane, Willie Nelson, Adam Duritz (lead vocalist of the Counting Crows), and Darius Rucker (vocalist of Hootie & the Blowfish). Additionally, her voice can be heard as backing vocals on many other recordings.
