Childhood and Early Life
Thomas Luke Mably was born on March 1, 1976, in London, England. He grew up with two older brothers and a sister. From an early age, Mably was drawn to acting and starred in homemade horror films. Upon graduating high school, he applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art but attended the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama due to its lower tuition costs. After the first year, his parents could no longer afford his education, and local authorities refused to finance his studies. Mably wrote to Anthony Hopkins for help, who sent him a check for £2,000. Mably was awarded a grant for his education and offered to repay Hopkins, but the actor advised him to put the money to good use in the future. Mably graduated from the school in 1998.
Films
After graduating from the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama, Mably began building his filmography. He had early roles in the television series "EastEnders," the zombie horror film "28 Days Later," and a series of commercials. Mably's first leading role came in the romantic comedy "The Prince and Me," released in 2004. The film centers on the relationship between medical student Paige (Julia Stiles) and Danish Crown Prince Edward. Mably recalls the scene with cows as a memorable experience. Despite having a grandmother who owned a farm, he did not know how to handle animals and chose not to learn beforehand as his character was not skilled at milking either. However, he did master driving a lawnmower.
The following year, Mably appeared in the comedy "Being Stanley Kubrick" starring John Malkovich. The script was based on the life of British con artist Alan Conway, who impersonated director Stanley Kubrick in the early 1990s. In 2006, the story of Danish Prince Edward continued in the comedy "The Prince and Me: The Royal Wedding," with Kam Heskin replacing Julia Stiles as the female lead. That same year, Mably starred in the dramatic thriller "Deceit" about three childhood friends, co-starring Matt Long and Emmanuelle Chriqui.
Mably played a central character again in the thriller "Exam." Set in a single room, the film revolves around eight characters interviewing for a job at a prestigious corporation. They are given a test with one question, but the situation quickly turns complex. The film marked the directorial, writing, and producing debut of Stuart Hazeldine and was nominated for a BAFTA award.
Mably went on to join the main cast of the television series "The Gates," in which he played a vampire. He then took on the role of a neurosurgeon in the multi-part drama "Combat Hospital" about the lives of medical personnel in Afghanistan, for which he received a Canadian Screen Award nomination.
After "Combat Hospital," Mably took a four-year hiatus from acting. He returned with guest appearances in television series such as "NCIS: New Orleans," "Silent Witness," and "War of the Worlds," among others. He also gained 10 kg of muscle mass for a supporting role in the feature-length drama "Hacksaw Ridge 2" starring Charlie Heaton, but the film did not garner widespread recognition.
Mably's next notable work was the thriller "The Conjuring: The Unholy Chapter" about a writer who finds inspiration in a haunted house but accidentally unleashes demons. Mably received the Award for Acting Excellence at the Prague Independent Film Festival for his performance. The film premiered at FrightFest in London in early 2022 and was released in Russian cinemas in the summer of 2023.
Personal Life
During the filming of "The Prince and Me," Mably began a relationship with Julia Stiles. The couple dated for eight months.
In 2016, Mably became engaged to his long-time girlfriend Andrea Deck, who is 18 years his junior. The American actress has starred in films such as "Les Misérables," "The Devil's Violinist," "The Crown," and "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It," among others.
Mably regularly shares photos with his beloved on his personal social media pages, but there has been no confirmation as to whether Andrea has officially become his wife. Until 2022, the couple had a dog named Marley, who died of cancer. In 2011, Mably adopted the dog from a Los Angeles shelter and brought it to live with him in London.
Present Day
Mably has been working on the video game Squadron 42, which has faced multiple delays in its release. The space combat simulator features an all-star cast, including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, and Gillian Anderson.
