Daily 12-Mile Treks for a Korean War Veteran

Despite being 98 years of age, Korean War veteran Luther Younger embarks on extraordinary daily treks, spanning nearly 12 miles, to visit his terminally ill wife.

Unwavering Love

Rain or shine, Younger walks from his home in Rochester, New York, to the hospital where his wife, Waverly, has battled brain cancer since 2009. "I'm nothing without my wife," Younger said with tears in his eyes. "It's so hard. It's so exhausting. I can't stand to see her like that."

A Lifetime of Dedication

Luther Younger's daughter, Luteta, revealed that her father has been making similar walks to various hospitals where her ailing mother has been treated for over 50 years. "He doesn't have to do this, but he wants to," Luteta said. "I could drive him, but he just can't bear it. He just wants to be with my mom." The devoted husband has even spent nights sleeping in her hospital room. "He won't leave her," Luteta added.

A Soulmate's Devotion

Speaking of his beloved wife, Younger shared, "She's my soulmate, and there will never be another one like her. She would come to me, kiss me, and call me 'sunshine' and feed me in bed. I miss that so much."

Community Support

To help cover medical and transportation expenses, Luteta started a GoFundMe campaign. As of September 3, 2018, $59,052 had been raised out of a $65,000 goal, with contributions from 1,607 donors.
