Chinese Dancers with Physical Disabilities

Tao Xiaowei lost his left leg in a tragic accident at the age of four. Despite this setback, he grew up participating in sports and even excelled in cycling. Prior to the accident, she had been passionate about dance and ballet since childhood.

After Ma Li's accident, she felt devastated and believed that her dreams of pursuing a career in dance were shattered. However, attending an art event for people with disabilities changed her perspective. In 2005, Ma Li noticed Tao Xiaowei, a physically fit young man with one leg, and asked him if he loved dance. Tao initially had never considered dancing, but when she asked again, he answered with a resounding "yes." This marked the beginning of their collaboration. Seeing Ma Li gracefully move across the stage, Tao realized that anything is possible, inspiring them both to embark on a journey of learning and rehearsing together.

After two years of intense rehearsals, Ma Li and Tao Xiaowei presented their most famous show, "Hand in Hand," in the 2007 National Dance Competition. The audience was deeply moved by their emotional and life-affirming performance. Despite being the only dancers with physical disabilities among 7,000 competitors, the duo secured second place.
