Ma Dong-seok: A Force to Be Reckoned With
Early Life and CareerMa Dong-seok, also known as Don Lee, was born on March 1, 1971, in South Korea. At age 19, his family immigrated to Ohio, where he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He studied Health and Physical Education at Columbia University and later worked as a martial arts instructor, training well-known American professional wrestlers.
Film Breakthrough
Returning to South Korea in 2004, Ma Dong-seok made his acting debut in the melodrama "Dance with the Wind." He continued to build his career with a series of comedic roles, including "The Man from Nowhere" (2007) and the Western parody "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" (2008). In 2011, he starred in the comedic action film "The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil."
Critical Acclaim
Ma Dong-seok's breakout role came in 2012 with "Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time," a crime thriller set in the 1990s. His performance as a tattooed gangster earned him a Baeksang Arts Award for Best Supporting Actor and nominations at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and Buil Film Awards.
International Recognition
After gaining recognition in his home country, Ma Dong-seok began receiving offers for international projects. He starred in the zombie apocalypse film "Train to Busan" (2016), which made him a global sensation. He also had notable roles in "The Outlaws" (2017), "Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds" (2017), and "The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil" (2019).
Hollywood Debut
In 2021, Ma Dong-seok made his Hollywood debut in the Marvel Studios film "Eternals," playing the role of Gilgamesh. He became the first Korean actor to play a major superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ma Dong-seok is known to be private about his personal life. In 2016, he was confirmed to be in a relationship with Ye Jung-hwa, a TV host and fitness trainer. He has described their bond as "compatible," sharing a common love for English language and exercise.
