Biography of Martin Cornelius Jol
Martin Cornelius Jol, also known as Maarten Cornelius Jol, was born in 1956 in The Hague, Netherlands. He is a Dutch football coach and former player who played as a defender.
Playing Career
Jol's passion for football began at a young age, and he played for amateur clubs before joining the professional club ADO Den Haag. In 1973, he became a professional player for the club and went on to win the Dutch Cup in 1975. Jol then signed a contract with Bayern Munich in 1978 but did not achieve the expected success and returned to the Netherlands. He joined the club Twente as a free agent and played 71 matches, scoring 9 goals. In 1982, Jol moved to England and played for West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City. He returned to ADO Den Haag in 1985 and was named Dutch Footballer of the Year after his first season.
Coaching Career
In 1991, Jol began his coaching career with ADO Den Haag. Under his guidance, the team improved significantly and finished the season in the top positions. He then coached Scheveningen, leading them to success after a long period of struggle. In 1996, Jol signed a two-year contract with Roda JC, one of the most famous clubs in the Netherlands. In his first season, the team won the Dutch Cup, marking Jol's first major coaching achievement. From 1998 to 2004, Jol worked with RKC Waalwijk, a club facing relegation, and managed to turn their fortunes around, leading them to become league leaders. In 2001, he was named Dutch Football Coach of the Year.
Tottenham Hotspur
In 2004, there were rumors of Jol's move to the English club Tottenham Hotspur. As the new manager, he made significant changes to the team, resulting in a winning streak and him being named Manager of the Month in the English Premier League. Over the next few seasons, the team achieved notable successes, including defeating Chelsea and qualifying for the UEFA Europe League for the first time since 1990. They also won the Peace Cup.
Later Career
After leaving Tottenham Hotspur, Jol joined Hamburger SV in 2008 and led them to a top-five finish in the Bundesliga. The team reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup and the German Cup but lost to Werder Bremen. In 2009, he became the head coach of AFC Ajax, where the team initially faced some challenges but eventually emerged as league leaders, scoring a record-breaking 106 goals in a season. Jol continues to serve as the head coach of AFC Ajax and receives offers from other prestigious clubs every year.
