Introduction
Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed is the current Prime Minister of Yemen, serving since October 15, 2018. Born in 1981, Saeed is a renowned Yemeni politician and technocrat who holds a PhD in Architecture and Design Theory.
Early Career
Prior to his political career, Saeed worked as an architect and lecturer. He was involved in planning and construction projects as part of a consulting group in Cairo. Additionally, he served as an associate professor at the Faculty of Engineering at Taiz University.
Role in Peace Negotiations
Saeed participated in peace consultations with the Houthi rebels as part of the Yemeni government delegation. These negotiations took place in Geneva, Biel, Switzerland, and Kuwait.
Appointment as Prime Minister
On October 18, 2018, President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi appointed Saeed as Prime Minister, replacing Ahmed Obeid bin Daghr. This made Saeed the youngest Prime Minister in Yemeni history.
Presidency of the Presidential Leadership Council
On April 7, 2022, President Hadi transferred power to the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) led by Rashad al-Alimi. The PLC continued to appoint Saeed as Prime Minister.
Attack on Aden Airport
On December 30, 2020, a plane carrying Saeed and other newly appointed Yemeni government members landed at Aden International Airport. As the plane approached, bombs exploded on the tarmac and gunmen opened fire. The attack resulted in at least 25 deaths and over 110 injuries. Saeed was whisked away to safety.
