Early Life and FamilyMaggie Barnes, an American supercentenarian, was born on March 6, 1882, into a family of former slaves. She spent most of her life in Johnson City, a city in the state of North Carolina. Barnes married a farmer and also worked in agriculture herself. Together, they had 15 children, four of whom were still alive at the time of her death.
Longevity and Records
Although Barnes lived an impressive 115 years, she was never the oldest living person in the world or the oldest living person in the United States. She held the second position after Sarah Knauss in both categories. However, she still achieved remarkable records in longevity.
Barnes ranks among the top ten oldest verified living individuals in history, securing the tenth position. She also holds the eighth position among the oldest verified individuals in the history of the United States.
Legacy
Maggie Barnes is recognized as the oldest known resident in the history of North Carolina. She stands alongside other notable African American supercentenarians such as Lucy Hannah, Susannah Mushatt Jones, Gertrude Weaver, Elizabeth Bolden, and Jeralean Talley. Additionally, she was the last surviving person born in the year 1882.
Passing
Barnes passed away on January 19, 1998, at the age of 115 years and 319 days. Her death was attributed to complications from a minor leg infection. Although her relatives claimed that she was a year older, citing a discrepancy between her birth certificate and census records, her official date of birth remains March 6, 1882.
