Early Life and EducationMaggie Stiefvater was born on November 18, 1981, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. As a child, she described herself as an "anxious kid with a lot of phobias." Despite these challenges, she found solace in reading and writing. By the age of 16, she had begun submitting manuscripts to publishers.

Stiefvater was homeschooled from sixth grade onwards. She later earned a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Mary Washington. During her college years, she wrote approximately 30 novels, including thrillers, historical fiction, and fantasy. She also officially changed her name from Heidi to Margaret.
After graduating college, Stiefvater pursued a career as a portrait artist, specializing in horses using colored pencils. Her artistic talents extend to creating animated trailers for each of her books.
