Early Life and Education
Magomed Omarovich Tolboyev was born on January 20, 1951, in the village of Sogratl, Dagestan. He is a descendant of military leaders, with his great-great-grandfather, Tolbo, serving as a commander under Imam Shamil during the 25-year Caucasian War. Tolboyev's military career began in 1969 when he joined the army. He later graduated from the Yeisk Higher Military Aviation School and served in military units of the Air Force.
Flight Test Engineer and Cosmonaut
In 1981, Tolboyev completed the Test Pilot School at the Gromov Flight Research Institute (LII). He also obtained a degree from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1984. From September 1981 to July 1996, he worked as a flight test engineer at LII, conducting extensive research on fighter aircraft.
Between 1983 and 1993, Tolboyev trained as a cosmonaut-tester at the Center for the Training of Cosmonauts-Testers. He completed general space training at the Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City in 1987. Tolboyev also participated in the Buran program, performing system testing on the Tu-154LL and MiG-25LL aircraft.
Political Career
After retiring from flight testing in 1995, Tolboyev entered politics. He served as a deputy in the Russian State Duma from 1993 to 1995. From 1996 to 1998, he held the position of Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Dagestan. Tolboyev is also a member of the Political Consultative Council under the President of Russia, where he contributes to crisis management and the development of a new political culture in the North Caucasus region.
Recognition and Honors
Magomed Omarovich Tolboyev has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to aviation and politics. He is a Hero of the Russian Federation, a Honored Test Pilot of the Russian Federation, and a Colonel. He holds a Ph.D. in Historical Sciences and is the Honorary President of the Moscow Aerospace Salon (MAKS). Tolboyev considers the MAKS name his intellectual property, which has been recognized by the Russian Copyright Commission.
