Background and Military Career

Mahamat Déby Itno, the current President of Chad, is a seasoned military leader and the son of the late President Idriss Déby. He received his military education at various institutions, including the Unified Group of Military Schools in Chad and the French military school in Aix-en-Provence.

Service in Chad and Mali

After completing his training, Mahamat Déby served in the Chadian armed forces. He gained combat experience during the 2006 rebel attack on Chad's capital and later participated in operations in the eastern part of the country. His successful leadership in the Battle of Am-Dam earned him the rank of major.

In January 2013, Mahamat Déby was deployed to Mali as Deputy Commander of the Chadian armed forces. He led troops in the Battle of Adrar des Ifoghas against rebels in northern Mali, resulting in heavy losses for the insurgents. Despite the victory, 26 Chadian soldiers were killed, including Special Forces Commander Abdel Aziz Hassane Adam.

Rise to the Presidency

On April 20, 2021, following the death of his father in a rebel attack, the Chadian military junta declared that Mahamat Déby would lead the Transitional Military Council and rule for 18 months. He subsequently became the transitional president of Chad on October 10, 2022.

Known as "Kaka"

Mahamat Déby is affectionately known as "Kaka," which translates to "grandmother" in the local Arabic dialect. This nickname stems from his childhood, when he was primarily raised by his grandmother.
