Maya Vilkkumaa - Biography

Maya Vilkkumaa is a Finnish singer-songwriter and one of the most successful singers in Finland. She is known for writing and composing her own music and lyrics.

Early Life and Career

Maya Vilkkumaa began playing the piano at the age of 16. In 1990, she co-founded the band Tarharyhm? with her friends, whose songs gained airplay on national radio stations. Maya composed the lyrics and music for most of the songs of the group. After the band disbanded in 1995, she started taking singing lessons and also played keyboards in the band Hunajamelonit. Maya Vilkkumaa enrolled in Kallion lukio in 1992 and studied Finnish language at the University of Helsinki from 1993.

Solo Career

In 1999, Maya Vilkkumaa formed her own band, which currently includes keyboardist Tero Pennanen, bassist Niko Kokko, and guitarist Mikko Kosonen. Drummer Jan Petman left the band in the spring of 2007 and was replaced by Marco Timonen. Their debut album "Pitk? ihana leikki" was released in 1999, and the song "Satumaa-tango" from the album became a hit. Their album "Meikit, ketjut ja vy?t" released in 2001 was also successful, and their 2003 album "Ei" became one of the best-selling Finnish albums. The title track and "Mun el?m?" became popular hits. Their album "Se ei olekaan niin" released in 2005 went platinum, and the singles "Kes?" and "Liian kauan" received significant radio airplay. In September 2006, their single "Hei tie" reached the top of the Finnish national charts. In November 2006, they released a compilation album "Totuutta ja teht?v??" which included their greatest hits, four new songs, two rarities, and a bonus DVD with music videos, concert recordings, and interviews.

Later Career and Personal Life

In early 2007, Maya Vilkkumaa embarked on a tour called "Totuutta ja teht?v??" which consisted of 28 concerts from January 31 to March 24, 2007. The recordings from this tour were compiled into a live album called "Ilta Savoyssa." Their fifth studio album, "Superpallo," was released on October 1, 2008, with producer Riku Mattila. The album's first single was "Suojatiell?", followed by "Luokkakokous" and "M? haluun naimisiin." Maya Vilkkumaa released her sixth studio album, "Kunnes joet muuttaa suuntaa," on April 21, 2010.

Maya Vilkkumaa previously had a relationship with producer and sound engineer Sami Aaltonen. Since 2003, she has been in a relationship with Mikko Kosonen, and they got married in 2007. They have a daughter named Saara, born at the end of 2007.
