Early Life and Career

Mai-Britt Nilsson, a Swedish actress, was born on December 11, 1924, in Stockholm, Sweden. She studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school. Her debut film role was a minor appearance as a schoolgirl in 'Tänk, om jag gifter mig med prästen' (1941).

Breakthrough and Collaboration with Ingmar Bergman

Nilsson's breakthrough came in 1947 with a leading role in 'Maria.' In 1948, she starred in Jean Genet's play 'The Maids,' which caught the attention of Ingmar Bergman. Nilsson went on to appear in three of Bergman's early classics: 'Till glädje' (1950), 'Sommarlek' (1951), and 'Kvinnors väntan' (1952).

Later Career and Retirement

Despite her success in Bergman's films, Nilsson did not continue to collaborate with the director. She rarely appeared in films outside of Sweden and retired from acting in the early 1960s. She married twice, first to actor Anders Börje (1945-1949) and then to screenwriter Per Gerhard (1951). After leaving the Royal Dramatic Theatre, Nilsson worked at the Vasa Theatre in Stockholm for 30 years. In 1985, she permanently retired from acting and moved to the French Riviera.
