Early Life and Career
TOREGEZHALDY MAKEN (1923-2019): A Soviet Communist and Kazakhstani Statesman
Toregezhldy Maken was born on May 9, 1923, in Karsakbay, present-day Ulytau district of Karaganda region. He began his career at the age of 16 in 1939 at the Karsakbay Copper Smelting Plant, the first in the USSR's copper industry.
Military Service
In 1942, Maken joined the Red Army and graduated with honors from the Kharkov Military-Chemical College. He served on the Stalingrad Front as Platoon Commander and later as Assistant Company Commander for Technical Affairs. He then led the 23rd Red Star Battalion as part of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, liberating Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Austria.
Post-War Career
After the war, Maken attended the "Vystrel" Advanced Shooting and Tactical Courses in Ulyanovsk. He returned home in 1946 and worked as Deputy Director of Russian School No. 3 for military training. From 1948 to 1952, he served as Secretary of the Zhezkazgan District Council of Deputies.

Maken held various positions in the Communist Party and government, including:
Deputy Director, Sverdlovsk Urals Chermet Geological Survey Expedition (1952-1955)
Deputy and First Deputy Chairman, Zhezkazgan District Executive Committee (1955-1962)
First Deputy, Zhezdi Inter-District Collective and State Farm Production Administration (1962-1968)
Director, Zhetykonur Sheep Breeding State Farm (1968-1970)
First Secretary, Zhezdi District Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan (1970-1985)
Later Years and Recognition
In his later years, Maken worked as a researcher at the Zhezkazgan Regional Museum of Local History (1986-1988) and as Director of the Regional Museum of Mining and Smelting (1989-present).
Maken received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1976), the Order of the Red Star (1983), and the title of Honorary Citizen of Zhezdi and Ulytau districts.
