Malcolm Bilson: A Pioneer of Authenticity

Malcolm Bilson, an American pianist, has played a pivotal role in the promotion of historically informed performance.

Mozart and the Hammerklavier

In the 1980s, Bilson collaborated with conductor John Eliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists to record Mozart's piano concertos using a hammerklavier, an early form of the piano that was contemporary with the composer. Bilson's decision to embrace authenticity led to extensive research and detailed explanations of his approach.

Beethoven's Sonatas on Period Instruments

In 1996, Bilson embarked on a project with six of his students to record all of Beethoven's piano sonatas on instruments that existed during their respective periods of composition. Restored or reproduced copies were used for each piece.

Moscow Performance and Critical Reception

In 2002, Bilson performed works by Haydn, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven in Moscow. While critics praised his deep understanding of the musical material and the nuances of musical evolution, they generally expressed reservations about his playing, citing inaccuracies and dismissing the museum-like sound of antique instruments.

Teaching and Legacy

Since 1968, Bilson has taught at Cornell University, where he has influenced a generation of students, including Bart van Oort and Ursula Dütschler.
