Mel Hancock: A Life of Resilience and Humor
Mel Hancock, an American caricaturist, is best known for his work in the 'National Review'. Born Malcolm 'Mal' Hancock in 1936, he grew up as a healthy and active young man. However, a fateful fall would change his life forever. Mel was finishing school and had plans of pursuing a sports scholarship, but a spinal fracture and subsequent paralysis of both legs put an end to his dreams of a sporting career. The accident occurred during a game of golf while Mel was vacationing with his family in Wisconsin. Fueled by the excitement of the game, he failed to notice a ditch, stumbled, and fell. The following months were filled with agonizing pain in the hospital, and fate then led him to a wheelchair that would become a permanent part of his life. The chances of him walking again were practically nonexistent.
A Fighting Spirit
After the initial shock of his accident wore off, young Mel Hancock made a decision to fight. He realized that sitting in his wheelchair and feeling sorry for himself was pointless when life was still happening and he had no second chances. He understood that the best thing he could do in this situation was to view everything with humor. It was then that he began to draw humorous cartoons. His first audience consisted of patients and staff at the hospital where he was staying, but later, as he realized his talent for drawing, Hancock took a risk and offered his work to print publications. As a result, Mel became a highly renowned caricaturist, with his drawings being featured in 'The Saturday Evening Post', 'Washington Post', 'T.V. Guide', 'Playboy', and several other publications.
Embracing Life's Cards
'You have to play the cards that fate deals you,' Hancock once said. 'And physical disability – we are all disabled in our own ways, some physically, some mentally. Sometimes, disability helps us focus on our main talent. I was even lucky – until I lost my legs, I didn't know I had this talent.' Sadly, Mel Hancock passed away on February 16, 1993, at the age of 56, due to cancer. His works are still cherished and valued, and he is considered one of the most prominent American caricaturists.
