Biography of Theodore Rousseau

Theodore Rousseau was a French landscape painter and the leader of the Barbizon School of painting. He studied under landscape painter Charles Remond and later under Gleyre.

Connection with Romantic Artists

Rousseau was associated with the Romantic artists of the 1830s. His painting, "View in the Vicinity of Granville," earned him a medal at the Salon in 1834. However, in 1836, his painting "Descending Cows from the High Pastures of Fosia" was rejected by the jury. This rejection led Rousseau to move to Barbizon, a village near the Fontainebleau forest, where he brought together other landscape painters. This move led him to become the leader of the Barbizon School of landscape painting.

Characteristic Style

Rousseau's paintings were characterized by his meticulous study of nature. The grandeur and harmonious balance of his landscapes are reminiscent of the works of Dutch masters from the 17th century.
