Manuk Abeghian: Armenian Literary Scholar and Academician

Early Life and Education

Manuk Abeghian was born on March 29, 1865, in the village of Aghdam, Nakhichevan Uyezd, Erivan Governorate. From 1876 to 1885, he attended the spiritual seminary in Echmiadzin. He continued his studies at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin from 1893 to 1895, and at the Sorbonne University in Paris from 1895 to 1897. In 1898, he graduated from the University of Jena.

Academic Career

Abeghian taught at the Gevorkian Seminary in Echmiadzin (1885-1887 and 1898-1914), the Shushi Parish School (1887-1889), the Mariamyan-Ovnanyan Armenian Girls' School (1889-1893), the Nersisian School (1914-1919), and the Men's Gymnasium (1917-1919) in Tbilisi.

Political Life

From 1925 to 1931, Abeghian was a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Armenian SSR and the Transcaucasia.

Literary Works

Abeghian's literary works included "Armenian Folk Myths in Moses of Khoren's 'History of Armenia'" (1899), the monumental "History of Ancient Armenian Literature" (2 vols., published posthumously in 1944-1946), and "Versification in Armenian." He also edited a collection of variants of the epic "David of Sasun."

Linguistic Works

Abeghian's linguistic works were partially collected in "Theory of Armenian Language" (1931).

Legacy

Abeghian's name has been given to the Institute of Literature of the Armenian Academy of Sciences and to a secondary school in Yerevan. Postage stamps honoring him were issued by the USSR in 1965 and by Armenia in 2000.
