Marc Gené: A Life in Racing
Early CareerMarc Gené, a renowned Catalan racing driver from Spain, began his journey at a tender age of 13, capturing the Vice-Champion title in the Catalan Karting Championship. His success continued in 1988, claiming both the championship and the National Class in the Spanish Karting Championship. Gené participated in the European and World Championships in 1989.
Formula Ford and Formula Three
In 1992, Gené transitioned to Formula Ford, finishing fifth in the Spanish Championship with one victory and two pole positions. His talent shone again in 1993, becoming the European Championship's Vice-Champion with one win and three podiums alongside a second-place finish in the Formula Ford Festival. Gené became the Rookie of the Year in British Formula 3 in 1994, completing the season in 10th place.
Formula 3000 and Superformula
Gené made his leap into Formula 3000 in 1997, competing in five races but failing to score points. In 1996, he conquered the FISA Superformula Championship.
Formula One Debut with Minardi
Gené debuted in Formula One in 1999 with Minardi, partnering with Italian Luca Badoer. Despite a challenging season, he earned a sixth-place finish at the European Grand Prix, securing the first point for Minardi since 1995. His tenure with Minardi continued in 2000, but without scoring any further points.
Test Driver for Williams and Ferrari
After failing to secure a seat in 2001, Gené joined Williams as a test driver. He made his race debut at the 2003 Italian Grand Prix, substituting for an injured Ralf Schumacher. Gené continued his role as a test driver for Ferrari from 2004 to 2009, working alongside his former Minardi teammate, Luca Badoer.
24 Hours of Le Mans Champion
Gené's racing career extended beyond Formula One. He partnered with Peugeot in their prototype Peugeot 908 for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2009, he triumph was part of a winning team, together with David Brabham and Alexander Wurz, breaking Audi's winning streak. Gené also claimed victory in the 2010 12 Hours of Sebring.
